Have you ever spent time looking for a parking space in a shopping centre or grocery store and wanted to get off at the entrance and park yourself, especially in rainy or extremely hot weather?How much time would you save if you didn't have to look around for a parking space?(or how much would you save if you didn't have to pay valet parking?).Automatic parking is fast becoming a reality, and carmakers are using millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar sensors to do it.
You may be wondering: are wraparound cameras and ultrasonic sensors capable of parking?Today's sensors provide parking assistance; in other words, drivers still have to make judgments based on the feedback they give.As a result, cars are still not fully autonomous.
Autonomous parking needs to first identify the empty parking space or "free space", the distance is about 40 meters.This is its "search mode".Once an open space is identified, the car needs to maneuver into and park, known as a "parking pattern."
To achieve automatic parking, sensors should be able to detect other vehicles, kerbs and pedestrians ranging from 3 cm to more than 40 m in a wide field of view under any environmental conditions.Millimeter-wave sensors help achieve this by accurately detecting smaller objects (such as metal bars protruding from the ground) at distances less than 25 centimeters, which may not yet be effectively sensed by other sensing modes.Millimeter-wave sensors can also be operated in a variety of weather and lighting conditions.
Installing sensors in cars is a major challenge today.Because the millimeter wave sensor can be easily mounted behind the bumper, owners do not need to punch holes in the body or chassis.MMW can pass through solid materials such as plastics and bumpers without barrier, so installation standardization can be achieved regardless of the vehicle manufacturer or model.The number of sensors needed to achieve 360-degree sensing capability around the car is also much smaller than in other sensor modes.Only eight sensors need to be installed around the car once a week to achieve 360-degree induction, as shown in figure 1.

Automatic shutdown is realized by reusing the existing front and rear Angle radar (multi-mode).When the car is in driving mode, these sensors can be used as blind spot detection sensors or lane change assist sensors, which can support the detection of cars in other lanes within a distance of 80 meters.When the car is in search or parking mode, the sensor configuration changes dynamically so that it can sense objects at close range, ranging from 40 meters to less than 10 centimeters, to match the range of parking applications.The door's multi-mode obstacle detection sensor can also be used for parking applications.Based on these features, millimeter wave sensors are becoming increasingly attractive to top automakers.
