Microchip Introduces New Dual-Core and Single-Core ds PIC Digital Signal Controllers

Microchip's new dsPIC33CH512MP508 dual-core DSC supports applications with more program memory requirements. The dsPIC33CK64MP105 single-core DSC offers a low-cost option for applications requiring smaller memory and size. Developers can easily switch between these new devices because the pins of the dsPIC33CH and dsPIC33CK families are fully compatible.
The dsPIC33CH512MP508 (MP5) family extends the recently introduced dsPIC33CH to increase memory from 128 KB to 512 KB, which doubles the program RAM (random access memory) storage capacity from 24 KB to 72 KB.
The expanded device supports large applications that require multiple software stacks or larger program memory, such as automotive and wireless charging applications. Automotive applications require more memory to support AUTOSAR software, MCAL drives and CAN FD peripherals. The wireless charging function in in-vehicle applications requires an additional software protocol stack to support the Qi protocol and Near Field Communication (NFC), which in turn requires more program memory. For high-availability systems, real-time firmware updates using real-time updates are critical, but at the same time the overall memory requirements have doubled. In a dual-core device, one of the cores can be designed as the primary core and the other as the secondary core. The slave core is used to execute time-sensitive dedicated control code, while the master core is used to run functions such as user interface, system monitoring, and communication. For example, dual cores facilitate the partitioning of software protocol stacks for parallel execution of the Qi protocol and other functions including NFC to optimize the performance of in-vehicle wireless charging applications.
The dsPIC33CK64MP105(MP1) family is an extension of the recently introduced dsPIC33CK family of low-cost models for smaller memory and package applications, and offers up to 64 KB of flash and 28 to 48-pin packages in a minimum package size of 4 Mm x 4 mm. This compact device provides an ideal combination of features for automotive sensors, motor control, high-density DC-DC applications or stand-alone Qi transmitters. Single-core and dual-core dsPIC33C devices provide fast deterministic performance for time-sensitive control applications by extending context select registers, reducing interrupt latency and speeding up instruction execution for math-intensive algorithms.
Joe Thomsen, vice president of Microchip's MCU16 business unit, said: "With the 76 dsPIC33C single-core and dual-core devices in the family, customers can take advantage of common tools, general-purpose peripherals and their memory, I/O, performance or budget requirements. Package compatibility is easier to adjust. In addition, dual-core devices make it easier for software development teams to integrate software, allowing them to focus on control algorithms without having to be distracted by communication and day-to-day code."
All devices in the dsPIC33C family include a full-featured, functional safety hardware that simplifies ASIL-B and ASIL-C certification in safety-critical applications. Functional safety features include multiple redundant clock sources, Fail-Safe Clock Monitor (FSCM), IO Port Readback, Flash Error Correction Code (ECC), RAM Built-In Self Test (BIST), Write Protection, Analog Peripheral Redundancy Wait. With a powerful CAN-FD peripheral set and new support for 150°C high temperature operation, these devices are ideal for extreme environments such as automotive front covers (hoods).
The dsPIC33C family is supported by the Microchip MPLAB® development ecosystem, including Microchip's free downloadable MPLAB X Integrated Development Environment (IDE), MPLAB Code Configurator, MPLAB XC16 C Compiler Toolchain, and MPLAB In-Circuit Debugger/Programmer Tools. Microchip's motorBenchTM 2.0 development kit now supports high-voltage motors up to 600V, helping customers adjust their motors with Field Oriented Control (FOC) algorithms.
The entire system has a variety of development boards and plug-in modules (PIM). New device development tools include the dsPIC33CH Curiosity Development Board (DM330028-2), the dsPIC33CH512MP508 PIM (MA330046) for general purpose design, the dsPIC33CH512MP508 PIM (MA330045) for motor control, and the dsPIC33CK64MP105 PIM (MA330047) for general purpose design. dsPIC33CK64MP105 PIM (MA330050-1) for external op amp motor control and dsPIC33CK64MP105 (MA330050-2) for internal op amp motor control.
Supply and pricing
The dsPIC33CH512MP5 devices are available now in 48/64/80-pin TQFP packages, 64-pin QFN packages, and 48-pin uQFN packages. The dsPIC33CK64MP1 devices are available now in 28-pin SSOP packages, 28/36/48-pin uQFN packages, and 48-pin TQFP packages. The dsPIC33C devices are priced at $1.34 each.
The dsPIC33CH Curiosity development board is available now for $39.99.The dsPIC33C PIM development board is available now for $25.
