The MAX77860 can effectively reduce system complexity and simplify software development process
Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. (NASDAQ: MXIM) announced the MAX77860 3A switch-mode charger, which helps designers easily add a USB type-c (usb-c) charging function to portable lithium-ion battery-powered devices.This device is the industry's first integrated USB port - C control and buck charger, USB charging function - C without independent host controller, simplify the software development process and reduce the overall bill of materials (BOM) costs, applicable to financial payment terminals, mobile power supply, industrial computers, scanners, wireless communications equipment, portable speaker, multimedia equipment, charging base and console application.
Now, a wide variety of consumer electronics devices are adopting usb-c interfaces to support rapidly evolving communications and battery charging capabilities and to achieve smaller design sizes.Current design requires current detection by the main processor and upper limit of charger input current.According to IDTechEx, early usb-c adoption has been driven by PCS, laptops and mobile phones, and usb-c adoption will grow at an annual rate of 8.5 percent in 2020 thanks to the popularity of other portable devices.
To reduce design size and simplify system hardware and software design, the MAX77860 integrates usb-c configuration channel (CC) port detection and 15W battery charger.These features allow the battery to be charged at the maximum usb-c rate, reduce design size by 30%, and simplify the software development process.The CC pin detection function eliminates the need for end-to-end USB connection, enabling self-starting charging and simplifying the design.
The main advantage
High integration: independent port controller and many discrete components are omitted;Thanks to the switching frequency up to 2MHz/4MHz, the size of inductance and capacitance is further reduced, making the scheme size 30% smaller than that of the closest competing devices.High integration effectively reduces the overall BOM cost.
High efficiency: the high efficiency buck converter can effectively reduce the heat dissipation of the system, with the efficiency up to 93% and the charging current up to 3A.
Design flexibility: downward compatible, supporting both usb-c and traditional BC1.2 or dedicated adapters.Integrated analog to digital converter (ADC) saves microcontroller resources and supports high-precision voltage and current measurements.
